Pro-union, Civil War board game from 1862

Who’s up for a round of “Game of Secession, or Sketches of the Rebellion”? This civil war-era board game is similar to Chutes and Ladders, only with a lot more blood. It was produced by Philadelphia’sĀ Charlton & Althrop during the US Civil War and features the simplest of mechanics: roll some dice to move your piece and then do what the space says (typically move forward or back). There’s no strategy here; it’s all luck.

Land on a space that celebrates a union victory and jump ahead! Stop on a confederate-themed space and you’re sent backwards. Just don’t land on the “Ms. Columbia” space, as it’ll send you back 44 spaces!
