   The pieces cannot fit into the middle spaces, which makes it impossible to follow the game per instructions. You just have to pretend that you can skip past the middle pieces. It was actually more interesting as a building toy than a game, so that’s why we kept it.

   The concept of the game is good, having a 3 dimensional checkers, but you need to put the game together with snap together plastic pieces and then it’s difficult to reach into the lower and middle spaces.
   I would not recommend it

   I purchased my first Gridopolis game via boardgamesweekly.com.com in March of 2019. Happy to see it in stock again on the site and available with Prime shipping, too!

   I’ve purchased three sets of the game for family members. It’s a welcome alternative to the constant screen and tablet-based games, especially during the last year of being stuck at home. It’s simple to set up and play, but has endless variations.It’s been cool to see the variations when they’re uploaded and shared. Basically, a design-your-own-game concept. I look forward to future expansion sets!

   Gridopolis is checkers in 3d with the twist that you can add a board space or remove on instead of moving. Players start with a home row and six pawns. The pawns can only move in any direction away from the player’s own home row but they can move forward, diagonal and upward or downward combined with either of those. A pawn that reaches any opponents home row can become a king that gets double moves per turn and the ability to move backwards. Capturing pieces is just like checkers except you can jump in vertical space, too. There are also teleporters on the board that allow instant movement between any of them. The ability to add squares or block them adds some additional strategies that make Gridopolis more interesting than traditional checkers. The safe spaces around the corners of the board can be suddenly made not so safe by adding a space. The blockers can let a player defend their home row or backstop a piece so it can’t be captured as easily. Ultimately, despite the building twist, Gridopolis does share the same flaws that checkers has. The end of the game when few pieces are left is not very fun. Since the standard game mode is last man standing, it is possible for a player to prolong the game in a stalemate by simply moving along safe spaces, especially if they deploy blockers and extra spaces, too.

   We pulled this game out with our kids for a relaxing game after dinner, and it didn’t quite fit what we were expecting, but that’s not a bad thing. Overall its more of a “gaming system”, where it includes some base instructions, but then encourages you to branch out, test some new things, and that was really fun for our older kids (8-10). Setup and reading the instructions took about 20-30 minutes, but was fun because while I was reading I was able to have them put the grid together. Overall it was a good time, and although it doesn’t compare with a traditional sit down and play game, we had a blast. One thing that made it more fun for us is to not really play it competitively. That might be possible with older players, but we just had fun and would break some rules like allowing pawns to respond after being jumped. The box also has nice carboard dividers for each of the components for organization which is really nice. We used all the pieces, and they all fit well together and didn’t have any rough edges or anything. They feel pretty durable as well, and as long as you are careful with them they should last pretty well. This game really does have a lot of re-playability, and is a lot of fun.

   I don’t want to waste resources to send the whole game back. I like the game and I will keep it. Can someone contact me to just send me this one piece please? The game came with the exact amount that it needs so I need a replacement but I prefer to not have to go through the trouble of returning the whole game and wasting the boxes and gas it takes to do that.    WOW this game is super cool to play! It’s an incredibly creative and fun alternative to chess for kids. Once you start the game, you can change the game board with seemingly endless possibilities. If you have a builder child, this is fantastic.

   The quality of all of the parts is solid. You don’t need to worry about cheap pieces staying together. All of the connections are solid and the game pieces sit nicely where they are supposed to.

   My son played this all day when he first got it. This is not a gift that your kid will play with once and get thrown in the closet!
