   I had not heard of this game before I bought it. I was searching boardgamesweekly.com’s list og board games and came across it. Intrigued, I looked into it. Loved the sound of it, read some reviews and knew I needed to get it. So glad I did! It’s almost like Dungeons and Dragons… with out the dungeon delving. Essentially, you are creating the origin of your character through 3 acts. So while there is no dice rolling (though there is rune tossing) or any sort of battles per se, it is exciting to play.

   I absolutely love that the instructions heavily suggests that once the game is complete and the winner decided, that all players go around the table and tell the story of their character, using the cards they gained throughout the game to weave said story. So well done and the art is fabulous! What I’ve taken to doing as well, is actually fleshing out the story of my character in full. It’s great if you are a fantasy writer who is looking for characters to put into your story, or if you are a Dungeon Master, looking for NPC characters to put in your game. I will definitely be getting the expansions to this great game.

   One of my sons was browsing and wanted to buy this game with his birthday money (my sons and I are into D&D). It turned out to be an excellent choice. D&D knowledge ISN’T needed, just have a basic understanding of character traits, as they are heavily involved in driving the gameplay (you could even say they are the “point’ of the game). I’m not going into specifics in this review (it’s best seen and tried as opposed to read). There are several Youtube videos that help with learning to play. On that note, play a few “practice games” together first. It seems really complex at first, stick with it. It’s incredibly rewarding, trust me. The overview (keeping it bare bones basic) The entire point is to have fun scoring points while building your character. On the surface, that may not sound fun, but it’s executed SO well, it’s a blast. The game uses several different types of cards that have several categories of info on them. Some cards are used explicitly to build up your character (giving you better odds at scoring points). Other cards are used more like “mini interactions” that can give points. There are many different, well thought out, risk/reward opportunities in every turn you play. The player has a nice selection of choices to decide and the opportunity to spend resources to increase the odds of success every turn. The element of chance is put to good use. Even failure gives a little something back. Pros- Very replayable (with expansions *maybe* infinitely) Turns have a significant “feel” to them. You have strategy and consequence on your mind throughout. Even when it isn’t your turn, you’re engaged and having fun with the possibilities. Nice balance of guiding you while still preserving your choice on how to play. The element(s) of chance are used very well in this game (feels just right) The overall pace and cards facing up allow for a good time socially. You have room to talk with each other (something I want with my boys). I can see friends getting together around the table often with this game. Expansions to the game should be easy and HUGELY rewarding to the gameplay. Don’t worry, it isn’t a cash cow situation, I believe this game was designed to grow. That said, there is already an expansion (support it, it’ll be well worth it) A game takes 35 min. to an hour and 1/2 depending on # number of players and rule familiarity The game complexity is functional, not artificially added to make it “seem” challenging Cons- You’re so eager to play the game to it’s fullest, it might be discouraging to play a few practice games first. The learning curve is steep-ish for some people (you’ll forget some things occasionally during turns). A lot to keep track of (not a con for some people, part of the fun for others) Some people are going to feel like this is a nice sized starter set, but there’s nothing you can do about that. Expansions will not (in my opinion) be able to keep up with the demand as more people discover this great game. Final thoughts- Buy this game and get started. It stands well on it’s own and I think it’s going to grow quickly. As I understand it, it was a Kickstarter and the expansions are too. I encourage everyone to jump in. The way the game can be expanded (cards and plastic *shouldn’t* be too expensive to fund and the expansion effect is huge.

   I love it, simple as that. We have played this in only two game sessions so far. The first time was when we unboxed the game for the first time, we played 4 games with 2 players and were instantly hooked. If it hadn’t of gotten so late at night and work the next morning we would have kept playing just to explore more fun story combinations. Our second time pulling this off the shelf we had the max 4 players. With 2 of us already being very familiar with the simple rules at that point we got our new players quickly through their first game, they were then eager for more shots at building their perfect Adventurer. So that time we did 5 games, our one teaching game and then we gave our 2 new players plenty of chances to get into the strategy and and in the end they won some of the games. So what does this mean? Easy to learn game, admittedly the rules are a bit too simplistic at time as they don’t cover some “what if this happens” combos, so we did take to the internet maybe 2 times to see other gamer’s opinions on a card here or there. I love though that the Rules are so simple, you can teach this game to brand new players easily in the 1 hour playtime, after that you’ll get through games in and average of 45 minutes maybe, depending of course on your slowest decision maker or just how much fun you’re having just talking while playing a pretty game. So I mentioned pretty. Wow on this part, it’s very pleasing aesthetically. I love the light and dark sides of the box art, and the cards….. They had some amazing artists on this project. I usually am playing upside down to most of the cards on the table so I don’t get to get a great look at the art until I choose a certain card to build my hero’s adventure. After I decide on a path I find myself really enjoying each card that I’ve drawn. With only a tiny bit of imagination I can build the narrative story of what my Adventurer is doing in my head, the amazing artwork and rich colors on the cards just add to my own personal narrative. This is my absolute favorite aspect of this game, the narrative story that builds around your Adventurer just based on the traits or challenges you decide to take on. Did you decide to slay a dragon, or did you choose instead to escape so that you live to fight another day. Whichever choice you make, if you make the right roles with your Runes you’ll increase your Adventurer’s strength and ability to take on a harder challenge on your next turn. Even if you fail though don’t worry, your Hero just had a minor setback, you’ll gain an experience token to let you possibly turn the tides on your next adventure. A fun thing at the end is the Winner tells their story, again with a bit of imagination you can turn that into a fun retelling of who you are, what you learned, and the trials your conquered all on the way towards reaching your Destiny. Did your character follow the path of the light or did you tread down the path of darkness? Your choices will be important to your Destiny and how your final scoring works. I am already looking forward to adding additional expansions to this to build upon the number of cards we have to choose from and play with. Pro Con time for those looking for the quick facts. Pros: Theme Artwork Narrative story Quick to learn Lots of replayability The Runes; I didn’t mention these but they are great quality items, more interesting that dice, “casting” our your runes is a neat game mechanic. Don’t be afraid to add some of the Dark Runes to your rolls! Cons: Biggest issue is the player boards. They could really stand to be thicker. Mine were already warped straight from a freshly opened box. “If” an upgrade to the player boards ever did happen I’d love to see the cards equally get a more protective thickness or finish to them, but they are fine as they are now. The experience tokens, they’re fine I guess. I’m probably just too used to upgrading components of games and felt these were a bit cheap. Personally I will replace these with something of my own.
