   I love how simple and straightforward this is. It colors are strong, but neutral. The paint on the pieces clearly mark which chess pieces they’re meant to be, and they store easily inside the box.

   It’s not great as a decoration piece, but it’s a great way to have a chess and checkers set around, especially if you’re working with a younger crew.

   Okay, there’s good things and there’s things that can be improved. First off, this feels solid like and heirloom piece I would have found at my grandparents home. I love the nostalgic coloring. However, it doesn’t make sense to me why we have two different colors of the same game board. The game board was initially a little tough to get out, but I think that was swelling of the wood from travel. I like the idea of the simple game pieces, but I think the sizes should have been different for the chess pieces and maybe had separate pieces for checkers. There is so much extra space under the board, it could easily accommodate checker pieces. With that said, I’m not sure I would pay the price it’s currently listed at ($49) to buy this again as a gift. It’s just not worth it.

   Well let’s start with the good. It is made from quality wood and has a solid feel to it. It looks good and has a great feel to it. All the pieces are stored inside and are held in place in seperate compartments so you do not have to search for pieces. Now the bad the color of the white pieces are a faded look which makes it hard to see especially in low lighting. The pieces are all the same size. I would have preferred them being a different size. Pawns vs main pieces for instance. Being all the same size will be difficult to pick up and move. It is great fun to play though in any shape. It is right at medium size. To large to be portable and to small to be full size. So functionality and color of pieces is why the four stars. It would be better if it had magnets to keep the pieces in place. It is a medium value for my money. I suggest to make up your mind and either go for a travel chess or a bigger set

   So if you ( the reader / viewer ) like myself like those old school chess & checker game board, then this is what I would recommend, nothing fancy, just good old old school style board game, made out of wood, when I open this thing it really bring me back 40 years ( I started to learn how yo play these 2 games around 10 yrs old ), back then it’s just a simple board Gabe just like this set, solid, base, again; nothing fancy, no bs. It’s the exact size not big not small, one side of those piece and the pic of the character for chess then other just 1/2 plain 1/2 red for checker. Anywhere’s the break down; Pro; really old school, make out of wood, easy straightforward yo use, round pieces, smooth, no sharp edges, kind of heavy but it just mean it’s durable, Con; I have not see anything negative about this set yet, if I do find out one day then I will update and let you guys know. Conclusion; I can’t wait to call my friends to come over for a game of cheese or checker.

   While I feel this set is a nice concept and it is made out of all wood, it doesn’t impress me as much as I had hoped for. First off, just getting the board out of the frame to be able to get to the pieces was a royal pain. Likely due to the paint on the frame, mine was actually stuck together and even once freed, it is still a tight enough fit that I had to get flat putty knife to wedge in the edge to get it out. I tried using my finger nails and was unable to get it free. Turning it upside down and shaking it didn’t work either. At least it is unlikely to come apart if you transport it somewhere, though I think it would have been better to have at least some form of actual latch of even magnets to hold the top in place in a more controlled manner. Once you get it open, the pieces are stored with individual pieces of cheap foam holding them in place. It would have been much better if the slots had been sized to actually fit the pieces. Furthermore, the pieces themselves are…underwhelming and the paint could stand to be a lot more vivid. As is, it is quite difficult to scan the board during chess and really take in the positions. I also don’t like the opposite side of the black pieces being yellow for checkers…it just feels wrong (they should have been black). When you get kinged in checkers, I guess you would just flip the piece back over and let it have the chess symbol visible, which is functional but not great. Based on the amount of storage room inside the board, they could have easily included separate pieces for both chess and checkers and given them a bit more detail, and at this price, I think they really should have. So, not terrible, but not great, and personally not worth the price. Personally, I’ll probably just print some standard chess pieces for it.
