I’ve played Stone Age, Architects of the West Kingdom, Paladins, Raiders of the North, Caverna, Lords of Waterdeep, and this is my absolute favorite after about 10 plays.

The original Caylus is one of the OGs of the worker placement genre, and this takes the original formula and streamlines it into a slimmer and more elegant package. Absolutely superb, a perfect introduction to the genre for newcomers, while also offering an astounding level of depth.

My review: I think Caylus 1303 is an improvement over Caylus (1289). This will be much easier for new and inexperienced players.
There are only 4 pages of actual rules. In nice big font. That player aid on back is terrific, too. The rule book is easy to follow. And, the new board layout makes the game easier to teach, more intuitive, and easier to play.
I think new and inexperienced players will easily compete with experienced players (that was a drawback to playing Caylus (1289)–experienced players seemed to trounce new players and the scoring track made the game seem pointless).
We have played this at 2 players (really good and I won the Great Teacher Award–i.e., I lost) and 3 players (rules were taught in 7 minutes and we played in about 2 hours–because of my own AP when I fell behind early). I like this much more than the original. Hope you all do too.

We have really enjoyed this game, but it is missing pieces, it’s frustrating to buy a brand new game and it not come with everything. Five star game play, but two stars for not being complete.
