   Obwohl die Anleitung erst sehr sperrig wirkt (Englisch, und dass Firefly-Englisch und sehr komplexe Spielregeln), macht das Spiel dann wirklich Spaß. Man fühlt sich schnell wie Mal auf der Brücke – mit meckernder Mannschaft, betrügenden Zwischenhändlern und störenden Gesetzeshütern… Für die Rookie-Captains gibt es ne erste Mission, und man kann sich sogar ganz allein ins Verse vorwagen, aber natürlich macht es am meisten Spaß, mit anderen Browncoats zu spielen.
   Die Materialien bestehen “nur” aus Pappe und Plaste, aber nach nur wenigen Minuten ist man so mit Schmuggeln und Verhandeln beschäftigt, da stört das gar nicht mehr. Einzig einen Plastesaurier statt einem aus Pappe hätte ich mir im Spiel gewünscht, aber den werde ich mir noch besorgen. Mal sehen, ob ein Patenkind oder ein Kind von Arbeit einen Saurier gegen ein anderes Spielzeug eintauscht 😉

   テレビや映画を題材にしたゲームはうわっつらだけ素材を持ってきているものが多いですが、これはちゃんと「好きなひとたち」が作った感じがします。英語版しかありませんが、Firefly や Serenity 好き (マニア？) には楽しめると思います。

   Someone told me; “This game drips with theme.” They were spot on! Everything in this game is somehow a direct quote or reference to the show “Firefly” or the movie “Serenity” which is based on the show. If you have not seen either of these, you should hold off on buying this until you are certain you like the theme. If you DO love the show, or even just science-fiction westerns in general, you will most likely love this game. This game does a great job of ‘recreating’ life as captain of a small-time cargo ship. You must keep your ship fueled, repaired, and manned with good crew. The only way to do this is by taking jobs from a handful of contacts. Some jobs are easy and legal, some are challenging and illegal, and some are just downright immoral and could anger your crew. The goal of the game will differ depending on which ‘Story Card’ you select at the beginning of the game. Some stories involve achieving a specific objective at a planet by first achieving a list of goals, some stories pit player vs player in a race for money, and some stories are just to survive past a certain round. The Story Cards provide re-playability and players can even custom design their own stories. I have played the game twice solo and twice with two-players. The game plays best with multiple players, but also has a very solid solo story.

Having a review on a Firefly board game may not be the most useful thing you’ll read today, if you’re here, you probably already love Firefly and plan on buying it. Like you, I’m a big fan and with the lack of more seasons or movies this game provides an awesome way to keep the story going. Everyone I play with comments something to the effect of this being a way to create new episodes because there is so much content and it plays out different every time. My only complaint is a minor one: there are So. Many. Cards. By that I mean the number of different decks for each aspect of the game. Because there are so many each player has to have a significant amount of space in front of them to lay everything out. We ended up using an entire dining table wither very little free space. This game still deserves 5 stars though as it is this same extensiveness that leads to what feels like infinite possibilities every time you play. The included rule book is a gem itself as you can see a lot of work went into designing it. Don’t even think about trying to skim it though. I’ve played 2 games so far where the first one took us a good hour to get going and stretched into a good 6-8 hr game over two days. The second game was about 4 hours before we had to end it and even then we were checking the book to figure out how to handle the nuances. I would recommend not worrying about getting them right the first time. After playing for a while you’ll catch the little things and you can adapt then. One Easter egg I like is the dinosaur token that you pass to the next player when you’re done with the man parts of your turn. Fans get it instantly but it’s also a good way to let the next person start while you finish up administrative tasks.

   Since there were so many reviews for the main game, I have put off making a review for it and instead opted to review most of the expansions. I think it’s about time that I wrote one, so here goes: This game is amazing. I have played it probably about a dozen or so times with varying amounts of players and tried many of the story lines. I’ll try to stick with writing about the core game, although (as I will probably mention more than one more time) the game works best with the expansions, IMO. Let me take you through what is included. The board consists of the core (Alliance) space and the border space (technically also Alliance since the unification war was decided in The Alliance’s favor). Movement around the board is fairly straightforward and extremely open. There is no set path you must take and your decisions are your own on even how you want to move. You may mosey and move one spot for free and without any drama or you can try to full burn and move as far as your ship will allow on using up a fuel token but be aware, you will have to draw from the Nav Deck every sector (space) you move. You will receive 2 Nav decks (one for moving through core space and one for border space). Some cards will say keep flying, others might have you encounter a derelict ship to scavenge from or maybe you’ll end up gathering the attention of an Alliance Cruiser or worse (Reavers!!). There are 5 main supply planets where you can try to pick up gear, ship upgrades, crew, or even a new drive core for your ship. There are also 5 different contacts who you can meet up with to get paying jobs from. Some are on supply planets (like Persephone where you can also deal with Badger), some are on otherwise empty planets (like stopping off for a chat with Patience on Athens), or you can even board the Alliance Cruiser and deal with Harken for some legal and simpler jobs. Find a crew, Find a job, Keep Flyin… The ultimate objective of the game though depends on which story you choose to play. I believe the core game only comes with the “Standard” Setup. [Let me, again, say how this game truly grows dramatically with the expansions. Most (if not all) expansions come with not only story cards, but also new ways of playing them via the set up cards. One story might seem pretty straight forward but when suddenly you play the Browncoat way, or “The Rim is the Thing”, it can really spice things up.] Most stories will take about 2 hours as you learn the game, but be prepared for your first match to take about double that as you learn the nuances of the rules. Looking for a friend, but everyone is working/on vacation/etc.? Well you’re in luck, because there is single player mode in which you are racing against the clock. I’d still recommend you play with at least one other person. As you grab more friends in the mix, the game will be longer especially if you are introducing new people to the game. There are 4 ships to choose from in the core game but you can have up to 9 ships via expansions. I couldn’t imagine what that would be like, but I have played a 5 person match and it was awesome as we constantly were competing for upgrades and crew while racing for the story goals. I don’t want to give too much away here, but I can honestly recommend this game to anyone, even if you haven’t seen the show or movie. I would have to say it makes a lot more sense to you if you have, but just all the more reason to catch up on the show too! Also the expansions, although not complete must haves, are very highly recommended IMO. My girlfriend and I love this game so much we actually bought a second copy when we vacationed at a family members condo in Florida. We found it funny how small the board seemed after having played with the other expansions, but it was still a lot of fun without them. We left it there with the thought that maybe we’ll add something to it every time we go. Tl;Dr: It’s fun and worth the purchase.

   This is a great game, just because it’s Firefly. It made for an excellent gift. However, I recommend watching a tutorial on how to play, as the rule book and instructions aren’t cut and dry. If you are planning on doing anything afterward… dont. This game, if played right will go on for hours and hours. I gave this 5 stars because the hours you put into it are so much fun, especially if your with someone you love and are watching g firefly at the same time. We love this game, but it’s no monopoly. It takes a little while to get the hang of, and set up can be time consuming as well. But if you love firefly… it’s worth it!
