The successor to Here I Stand trying out and changing some rules from the original game – i.e. Minor Powers, religious conversions, espionage, removing the suing for peace.
It isn’t as tight as HIS which has its pros and cons. There are more methods to gain VPs and inexperienced players may be too peaceful and watch another power peacefully win its way to victory. As a result, watching the table combined with effective diplomacy is arguably more vital than in HIS.
At the time of this writing I slightly prefer VQ to HIS but they’re both 10/10 ratings for me on BoardGameGeek.

If you love deep strategy games with multiple powers each with their own special abilities. This is the game for you. This game is the sequel to Here I Stand. Both are card driven games. You take control of one of the six powers of Europe. There are many ways to win vps besides war. You earn them through diplomatic influence, religious struggles, supporting artists and scientists. The games are long and even with experienced players it will eat up most of the day so be sure to figure out a plan for lunch.

If you want nitpicky, asymmetrical rules, this is the game. I love it. After three reads through the rules (and I had already played it ignorantly three times at a friend’s house) I felt ready to play all six powers against myself. It took me about twenty hours, including ten hours of looking up rules again. I saw on boardgamegeek the other day that even the designer forgot rules when playing the game, so I shouldn’t feel bad. I have a group of six coming over New Year’s Day to play, and I can’t wait. It’s one of the best historical simulations I’ve ever played.
