   I got this set to play with my chess enthusiast son. This is a beautiful chess set. The board and pieces are all marble. It comes with a heavy but sturdy carrying case.

   The board has a matte finish. It certainly isn’t shiny or gloss, although it is smooth and suitable for play. The back of the board has a thin foam pad glued onto it. The maker did put a rather large sticker with their name on the front corner of the board. I couldn’t peel it off, but will continue trying, as it’s not attractive at all on the front of a chess board.

   The pieces are all marble and feature a simplistic design. There’s no pad on the bottom of the pieces. The ad says pads are included to be put on, but our set didn’t come with any. The pieces are pretty and well shaped and sized. We had one knight piece that didn’t sit exactly flat and wants to rock just slightly after you move him, the rest all sit flat.

   The set comes with a massive carrying and storage case. The case itself is very heavy. I’m not sure if it’s made of real wood or particle board or OSB of some sort, but it feels strong and sturdy/hard materials. It is covered in PU feeling black material with padding on both sides. It has metal clasps on the front and a heavy duty carrying handle. It has two lines of ribbon also in black, that run around the edges. They’re only attached on the corners, and can be pulled out from the sides. It would’ve been better if they were sewn on.

   Inside the case is also padded. The board goes onto the padded bottom. And then the pieces tray sets on top. The bottom of the pieces tray is hard board and is covered but not padded. It sits directly on top of the chess board. The tray has padded cutouts for each piece. They’re not really customizer to each piece’s size. There’s two that are slightly taller for each color but other than that, they’re all the same. Some pieces are a little too wide, some a little too tall. Some very loose. The top inside is padded and folds down directly onto the tray.

   When you pick up the case, it is very heavy, but there’s no jostling or movement inside of the case. Everything is exactly where you put it when you open it up again. I love that this case feels indestructible. Exactly what my son needed.

   This is a beautiful set with simplistic elegance. I would recommend it.

   Gave this to my son for Christmas and it is really really nice! The board is smooth and beautiful. The pieces weren’t what I expected but they are nice. They could use a little more detail and better sizing, if possible. It comes with a beautiful case in storage for all the pieces and that’s really nice too. Don’t expect it to be light weight because it is not. It’s marble and is pretty heavy. If they ever made more detailed pieces, I would definitely buy them.

   Overall the board is nice and the pieces are even nicer, but the carry case is very iffy. The latches are cheap and takes a bit of playing with the case to get them to line up and close. Overall pleased, but the price could bit a bit lower. The packaging was top notch and very well protected for shipping.

   At first glance the set is beautiful. But upon closer inspection the quality of the board is really disappointing. There were tons of scratches and areas of the board that are clearly chips that were filled but don’t match. There’s also a 3-5 gram variation in the weight of each pawn. Definitely would not gift this. It feels like 2nd quality.
