   If you play board games only at home, then there is really no need for alternative forms. But if you like to play away from home — say at a coffee shop, on a train, or someplace outdoors, a traditional board game format usually does not work well. The problem with most board games is the board itself — large, containing creases (so it tends to fold up on itself if not set on a perfectly flat surface). And the pieces do not stay in place, a particular problem when playing on a moving vehicle, or outdoors in drafty areas.

   This board game solves most of those problems. First, it is very compact, so it fits easily on those smallish tables provided in most Internet coffee shops. Since it is small, it is easy to carry — just stow it in your backpack or suitcase. Second, the game pieces lock into place, so a slight breeze or rough stretch in the tracks will not send the tiles flying or sliding around.

   The only negative is that some tiles tend to pop out of the retaining squares on the board. A little cleaning up of the edges of the tiles with a pocket knife seems to solve this problem.

   If you’re into Scrabble and you want to play on the road (or the beach, or at the pool, etc.), get the travel version of the game. Inelegantly titled “Scrabble Game Folio,” the item is much better than it sounds. It’s Scrabble, just a little smaller, and easier to take with you. Plus, the tiles snap onto the board, so they won’t move around if the board moves (say, while you lean over to reach for your pina colada).

   Game Folio Scrabble is an exceptionally well made and well presented item. It arrived just before we went overseas and proved to be an excellent travel companion. We used it on the plane and nearly every afternoon in the hotel before going to the bar. Strongly recommend it for any Scrabble lovers who are planning to travel.

   We love this version. We keep it in the RV and play a game over several days or even several trips. Fold it up and put it away – the tiles stay in place. Even the trays have keepers on them. The Cover is very nice with a zipper closure.

   The travel version of Scrabble is a great idea, but it broadly misses the mark on ease of use. The tiles do lock into place — eventually! We constantly have to push some tiles back down and far too often one or more tiles will pop out of place when setting a new tile in place. We love to play Scrabble and, even with this version’s drawbacks, it still rates four stars for fun and, of course, any version of Scrabble should receive five stars for educational value. It’s durability remains in question — we haven’t used it that many times — but it give me the feeling that game parts will start breaking relatively soon. Because of the problems noted above, I can’t go beyond two stars in the overall rating. Sorry, Hasbro, but you “misspelled” this one. I just ordered a Deluxe Platinum Edition to replace this one. We want a version where the tiles lock in place, but the travel version isn’t the one for us.

   I bought this several years ago, and have been really impressed. You can play scrabble wherever you go! Moreover, when you have this, there’s basically no reason to use a full-sized board–with this, you don’t have to worry about having your tiles scatter if someone bumps the table. I haven’t had any of the quality issues others complain of, and overall really like this. It’s even light enough that I’ve taken it backpacking, and it’s absolutely awesome for long car and plane trips. The best part is being able to close it up with a game in progress and resume later. Really a stellar product!
