Got this for my son for Christmas. The material on the board feels nice and the pieces fit snugly into the inside of the case. The magnetic part of the board holds the pieces pretty securely so that you can move the board around without losing your placement. The snap flap that keeps the board closed works well. It is compact enough that he can put it in his backpack and take it to school.
The one thing this needs that would make this a 5 star rating would be to have a way to secure the halves together to keep them from trying to close if you’re not playing on a perfectly flat surface. A little snap along each side or maybe strong magnets at the hinge would be great. We tried playing on the couch and had to get a blanket to put under the board to even out the surface so the middle of the board did not have a huge gap in it.
Other than that (and the fact that my son beat me easily!) I’m very happy with this purchase. This is a nice chess set!

Whether it’s a gift for someone or just for yourself to play you have to get this chess set! Beautifully crafted and the magnets are amazing! My fiance and I play it in bed, on the go, heck the magnets are so great you can play upside down lol. You can take this anywhere as the pieces get stored inside and it folds in half and is held shut with a clasp. Definitely a must buy for chess lovers!!

My 8 year old joined the chess team this year and I wanted him to have a board he could use at home. This checks all the boxes I was looking for. It folds out flat as a board with nothing scratching the table. The pieces stick to the board nicely so they don’t move when he bumps it. The storage is great. It has extra queens. My son got into playing chess and this was perfect. It’s all leather with a snap closure and cut foam to store each piece in its proper place. The pieces and board are slightly magnetized so everything stays put if you’re playing on the road or the board gets bumped. Some of the pieces look a bit rough as far as wood carving is concerned. The horse’s eyes are manic. Despite that, it’s perfect!

This review is for the 15″ version of the Bucher&Rossini Leather Chess set. This has been a very high quality, very beautiful chess set.
