   OK a little old at 78 to start playing board games but I thought this would be a good game for me. The game is very involved so you really need a player who know the rules to help you play the game. YouTube is also a good place to find out how to play. With it’s +14 starting age it indicates the need for a high school or above age to really be able to grasp the game. It comes with a rule book of 80+ pages which is a good indication of it’s complexity. This is best played with friends of a like mind or in a store or gaming establishment to get then best use out if it. While the games aren’t too expensive it seems that there is a constant turnover of characters with people buying the latest and greatest so it can run up the cost. That said if you stick with it you can enter championship contest for prizes and bragging rights though it usually cost around $40 to do it. Best to check online to find places where you can play the game.

   My 7-year old son received this as a Christmas gift and was his first introduction to Heroclix. This starter is a great value compared to the 2024 starter sets: you get 10 figures with 2 large game maps, dice, tokens and rules – everything you need to play full games of Heroclix. The Empyre set includes many recognizable Marvel heroes (and villains) including Spiderman, members of the X-men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four.

   In-spite of the 14+ age recommendation, my 7-year old son could follow the basic rules and had a lot of fun. Learning the different powers takes some time, but the basic turn sequence and game play didn’t take long to pick up.

   I was very impressed with the quality of the maps. I expected these to be paper, but they are a sturdy cardboard. The scenario campaign is designed to slowly introduce new players into the game.

   If you are looking to get into the competitive scene, this is not a good choice since in 2024 it is no longer legal for modern play. Otherwise, this is a great product!

   The starter set is a perfect starter set for Heroclix. Heroclix is a very underrated miniatures game that has a lot of depth, that’s fast paced and fun. The set gives you everything you need including some very good miniatures and excellent quality game materials such as maps, rule books, dice and powers book. Well work it, give it a try!

   This was sold as new. The box arrived sealed, but upon inspecting the miniatures, I discovered 2 of them had sticky soda stains all over the dials, which were fused together and unclickable. The map tiles were sealed in cellophane, but they had been clearly dropped on a floor as evidenced by corners on a couple of the tiles being blunted. The paperwork was all sealed in a baggies, but the rulebook has curled corners, and I can clearly see little dirty thumbprints on each page. Finally, all the cardboard tokens were punched out of their sprues. I could understand a few coming loose during shipment, but not all of them. This product is clearly a return that had been repackaged and resealed and then sold to me as new.
