   We were instantly drawn into and knew this was a game we loved from our very first time playing it. This is not often the case; plenty of games have a learning curve that results in you not really appreciating a game until you’ve learned the deeper core of the game. Reavers is instantly welcoming, easy to learn, and is a remarkably satisfying game from the very start. I often look to my wife for her opinions on the games we play; she brings wonderful insight to things I might forget to mention. The smile on her face during our first game of Reavers is something I will always remember, she was deep into the game and absolutely having the time of her life quickly taking the lead and loving every moment of it. I hope that small story alone will speak volumes about how fun Reavers is and it certainly can verify that it plays amazingly well at 2 players, but what makes it fun? Well firstly there is an aesthetic appeal to the game boards, Reaver cards, and all those amazing colored dice all sitting out on the table that is hugely exciting. It’s said we feast first with our eyes, if so Reavers of Midgard is a seven course meal with all the lavishness that entails. From examining the card art to your eyes darting around the colorful and equally detailed game and player boards there is always something fun to spend a moment appreciating. Once on the table the true fun begins with a simple worker placement mechanism with balanced locations all across the board, in all our games I’ve not seen any spot be under or over powered. There was great care taken into making sure there are variable paths to victory and no players need ever play the same way. It makes for great gameplay that is open and accessible to new or skilled players alike, this would make a wonderful intro game for your friends and family. While you and your opponents are making your worker placement decisions there is near constant engagement and participation from all players at the table. When someone places a worker they get the best rewards from that particular space, however each other player is also able to take that same action if they can afford the cost. Also in a descending amount, other players next in turn can also receive diminishing bonuses from that location as well. This amount of inclusion of each player keeps everyone focused on gameplay and constantly adjusting and evolving their own strategy. Someone might have beaten you to the Raid Villages action space, but you still will have some opportunity to benefit from their action, and now you can take your turn elsewhere. I love this amount of engagement from everyone, I think it’s wonderful at 2 players but find it even more rewarding in 4 player game. No one is every stuck waiting for their turn and that specifically has made Reavers a popular choice in our gaming group, it’s never as much fun if player 1 is on their turn but player 4 is bored and doesn’t even have to watch the board again until their turn again. The cards and their ability to combo off each other make for some great scoring possibilities and some minor engine building with how you assign your Reavers according to your play style. There are some really great combinations between the prophecy cards and all other spaces on the board, you can forge your own path and be collecting glory for end game scoring that other players may not recognize as your strategy. This is my wife’s favorite part of this game, in her own words “there are just so many ways for me to win.” This is also coming from her very often winning this game, even though I’m concentrating more on combos she is adaptive and will bounce around the board almost randomly and pull out some large scores in he own way. There are times though when she might take on too many “terror” tokens which are a negative multiplayer to end game scoring. Players are offered very enticing rewards and more upfront glory points for taking them and although she would say she does not like that part of the game, it is more that she has a love/hate relationship with those decisions. They are exciting and can be a big factor in the end game scoring. I love when we get a new game and I know immediately it will have a forever home on our shelf, Reavers is one that scores highly on every rating I could give it. I’ve heard there are expansions in the future for this and am looking forward to those; I know already they will be instant additions for us. I would love to see it expanded to 5-6 players in the future with one of those expansions. Great choice for most any type of gamer if you like worker placement and dice you are in for an extra treat, those also enjoying card management and engine building will find some of those boxes checked off when playing this. We enjoy this one a lot, it makes frequent trips to the table and as I said it has a forever home on our shelf!

   very dry very boring euro… prefer champions of Midgard + expansions over this anytime. It seems like maybe they were relying on the success of champions to sell copies of this. mediocre.

   I had played Champions of Midgard and its expansions before playing this. I love CoM and have to say that I enjoy this one even more. I really like the follow mechanic that allows you to take the same action as another player if you have the resources to do it. If you liked CoM, I would definitely recommend this game.
