Invaders from Afar brings in two new factions to Scythe. Togawa, the Japanese faction, and Albion, the Scots.
After having played with both, I can safely say that these are powerful in their own right and fun to play with. Although they are the furthest from the factory (literally coming from afar) they do not have to deploy riverwalk to expand and are difficult to attack immediately (this makes a HUGE difference in a 3-4 player game).
There is an added game mechanic of flags and traps with the Japanese and Scots respectively. This makes for even more careful movement and optimization on the game board.
As always, the mechs and characters are beautifully designed.
Overall, this is a must-have expansion for anyone who plays Scythe regularly.

The two new factions integrate seamlessly into the base game. The miniatures look great and the additional player boards increase replayability. The traps and flags are an interesting mechanic for the new factions. Although Albion and Togawa have some powerful abilities, they don’t feel overpowered. Unlike the other factions, they don’t receive the Speed ability when deploying mechs. Great addition to an already great game. Although the expansion increases the player count to 7, I would not recommend playing with more than 3-5.

I am a new Scythe player and had never really played a game like it before. I love board games though and it looked so fun. It really is! I am hooked and all the friends I have played it with now love it.
So I ended up getting this expansion and it adds a new layer to the game and I really like the 2 new factions.
I was a little worried about the pieces being damaged or the boards being bent, for some games I wouldn’t care too much but this game is so tied up in it’s unique, beautiful look that I want all the pieces to look great and well-made. None of the boards were bent or damaged and the pieces were in fantastic condition. The only thing was a couple of the mechs were not snapped into the plastic holder box when I received it, so they were kind of loose in the box, but they weren’t damaged at all or anything. Would recommend.

Although it is not really recommended to play 7 players, it is good to have more factions (this expansion adds two new interesting factions) so that you would have more options to choose from, and this expansion comes with two more player-boards (militant and innovative) which are the great addition to the five player-boards in the base game (industrial, engineering, patriotic, mechanical, agricultural); adding more varieties even to the core five factions. Having said that, this expansion doesn’t introduce a new mechanic which is applicable to all factions, but the two new factions come with two new (but rather similar) mechanics that are specific to their own factions. If you prefer the new mechanic or new type of unit which can be added to your core factions, I would rather advise you to go for The Wind Gambit expansions. Having said that, this is the first expansion (released in 2016) which would probably go out of print sooner or later.

This scythe expansion adds the last two factions to the base game and allows you to play with up to 7 players! Even if you don’t want to play with that many players it is still great to add this to your game because each of the factions have their own special abilities and this will add to the flavor and replay of the game. If you do want to play with higher player counts I recommend you also by the board extension. It’s not very expensive and adds the missing third to the back of the base game board for a huge playing surface. This is a solid Buy it! From me.
