   (short story below) This cribbage board from House of Cribbage arrived in a timely fashion (yay Prime!) and was packaged protectively without insulting Mother Nature. The board comes inside a fitted box, inside a red “velvet” bag. (The bag is what I’d call – generously – velveteen, but it serves it’s purpose meekly.) As in the photos, it has a spiral 4-lane track, which is inlaid wood, not paint. A drawer which can be opened from either side can hold two decks of cards, and includes 20 metal pegs. I initially bought this cribbage board as a gift for my brother. I couldn’t believe the quality. The craftsmanship is exquisite. I know the board varies in a minor way from the sales photos, but to my mind, the board I received looks better – particularly the row keeping track of skunks, wins, and corners, which is inlaid maple like the spiral track, and looks clean and elegant. The wood is beautiful, and all the finishing details are lovely too. The velvet lining the drawer, or the little wood divider for the cards; the velvet finish on the underside (anyone who finishes things generally unseen gets extra points in my book). Also! The pegs are a good size, nice weight, and FIT into the holes neatly. The board just looks beautiful while you play, as the shining pegs move around the spiral. In my family, Cribbage is our *game.* We learn as children, and play as long as we breathe. I played a game with my grandmother when she was 98. She beat me. Okay, she skunked me. She also had, in her long life, not one but two 29-point hands. Part of the reason I bought this board is that it’s a four-lane/track board. Generally on a regular board, four people play partners. So here’s a board where four people can just play regular, or – and this is the part that feels wild and creative – *eight* people playing partners! For my family, that is perfect! Very giftable – after I gave my brother his, it was so amazing I had to buy one for myself. Then my mom was jealous, so Mother’s Day was a great excuse to give her one too. Both of them LOVE this board. Now my cousin is jealous… There’s another version where the wood is reversed, i.e. a bloodwood spiral set in maple. I chose the maple honestly because between me and my mom, it’s easier to see the holes against the pale wood. And House of Cribbage makes this amazing three-dimensional board… covet! One point – like many goods that come from overseas, there can be a scent from the finish. Airing overnight takes care of this. This is not a big deal to me, but I know it can be for some. To me, it was worth it to have this amazing cribbage board! While definitely a high-end piece, I feel I’ve gotten a great value for the money – these beautiful, hand-made, inlaid wood cribbage boards are absolutely unique. I’ve never seen anything else like them. The quality is such that this board truly is a family heirloom, destined to be passed down to my son, and to his children after that. LONG STORY SHORT: PROS * well made, exquisite craftsmanship * solid metal pegs fit well * beautiful to behold as you play * perfect for the true cribbage afficionado – or beginners too! * velveteen underside prevents scratches * protective bag * 4-track board great for up to 8 players! * great gift * unique, family heirloom CONS * not really a travel board (but House of Cribbage makes one I want…) * scent may require abatement * can’t think of any more cons. 🙂 Overall, I can’t recommend this amazing cribbage board enough. I’m thrilled with mine. You will not regret this purchase. I hope I’ve been helpful!
