   Very fun and thematic game that can be challenging, but is easily scaled up or down by objective cards. This game was an instant hit at the last gaming event I was at. The small encounters mixed with the overarching story makes for a very thematic game. I do see some of the encounters possibly becoming repetitive and with there being a few chronicles in the game, once you play through them, you kind of know what is going to happen during each game. However, they’ve already announced the addition of more chronicles in a new expansion so there is that to look forward to. Overall I believe it is a very enjoyable game and I would easily be excited to play this game anytime anyone would like to play.

   Oltréé brings an RPG feel to the table that players otherwise unfamiliar with role playing games can easily get drawn into and enjoy. There are bits of specialized story, playable characters that specialize in different professions and have their own signature skill, game decisions that are heavily influenced by thrilling dice roles, princesses, dragons, side quests, and world events that shake up and alter the entire game board as they enter play. Wow, what a fantastic board game experience Oltréé has been for us, it brought a fantastic co-op experience to the table that has a fast pace, interesting decisions for each player to make, has different events happening all over the board, and a production value that is beyond what was expected when we first opened the box. You and your fellow Rangers will work together to rebuild and old fortress, all the while patrolling the lands surrounding it. At those various locations there were be problems to solve, resources to gather, stories to unfold, and perhaps even monsters to fight. A roll of the adversity die on each player’s turn advances and sets the timing of the game, results may be that you advance one, two, or zero spaces on the track that serves as the creator of the specific game you’re playing in. You may be drawing and adding an Incident card to a location on the board surrounding your fortress, encountering a Problem that has broken out at one of the accompanying villages, or revealing an Event card that may cause a flood in one area making it inaccessible or mold may have taken hold in your food stores and results in your fort’s defense suffering. The last spot on the track is the Chronicle area, this is the narrative component of the game and is absolutely wonderful, you turn a new card each time and like the pages of a book there is a new part of the story to read and the next page features amazing art depicting the scene. Well written and interesting, the stories provide that awesome feeling of being right in the middle of what is happening, you aren’t just moving those great wooden horse tokens around the board, you’re a part of the story even if just for that small bit each time. You have decisions in the game to help increase your odds of being successful at the end of the story, and you’ll want to work on the Assignment which sets the game’s difficulty to achieve the best result. About replayability, at the time of writing this we have one last new story to go through, a few branching story choices, and some that we failed and want to replay again. You will be aware of the path the story takes as you replay any of the Chronicles, but with the ability to increase the difficulty with higher level Assignments, trying different characters, and the variable setup of the Incident decks that your Ranger’s need to clear in order to secure the zones around your fortress, we are already playing this more often and more times than many other games on our shelves. I’ve had the chance as well to introduce it to an entirely new group of players and I am able to play a secondary role of just helping clear the board, gather resources, and take build actions to help increase the strength of our fortress. There is enough game going on around the rest of the board and actions I can take that help support and build the co-op experience that the small part of me knowing the story part doesn’t matter. With the already announced future expansion I am excited to continue playing these stories a few more times until we beat them at the highest difficulties and don’t see much in the way of replaying anything. I mentioned production but wanted to save that for last, I’m really in love with the artwork; each of the Incident cards that you try to clear from the zones around the fortress has their own unique name and art with them. The character boards are thick with cutout spaces for your health token and again are wonderfully illustrated. The resource tokens are large wood pieces and player tokens are these really large and chunky horses with their Rangers on back and have a great feel moving them around the board completing the different tasks for your Assignments. Lastly and probably my favorite is the box storage itself, the inside box has folding doors that open up like treasure chests and store the various components. These are all additional perks on the top of what is already a fun and satisfying game that lets players do and complete so many different actions that in the end all add up and help to complete the main story goal. Great job on this one and a wonderful pick if you like simple but rewarding co-ops or just want that RPG story telling feel to your next game you play. I’m already looking forward to the expansion(s) and recommend Oltréé.

   Great co-op game. Unfortunately when I received it one entire side of the box top was damaged as if someone had taken a box cutter along the entire top edge. It was glaringly obvious and I can’t believe anyone would willingly ship something in this state to a paying customer. Very disappointing

   The presentation and quality most reminds me of Atlantis Rising 2nd Edition. Everything really pops and feels solid. The quality of the cards and cardboard is great. Even though some of the cards are smaller, they are large enough and numerous enough that they can be shuffled without requiring sleeving. And, the different designs for the resources is really great. I’m wondering if expansion content is out or coming soon. The rules take a bit of time to emphasize that there are long and short missions that you can play. However, the box only contains one short mission, and it is the one meant as a tutorial. I hope there is such extra content coming, because the adaptability of how you set the game up is one of the selling points, in my eyes. It is great that you can choose between long and short missions and separately choose to play easy, medium, or hard extra quests. However, with only one short mission and more medium difficulty quests than easy or hard, I don’t feel like there is as much freedom as was intended. Apart from what I already mentioned, the rules seem to take a death-by-1000-papercuts approach. That is, no single component is really all that complicated, there are just a lot of simple things to keep track of. You have the main mission playing out like a story book, extra quests that need done to complete the game, other events and disasters that keep coming out, resources to gather for quests and other actions, health to manage so you can mitigate other effects and keep your character’s special ability, supplies to manage to so that you can spend them for extra actions or to manipulate dice, buildings to build for extra effects, a fortress to improve to secure board spaces, spaces to move to to gather said resources, health, and manage the events and disasters that are happening… It is a lot. I got this game intending for it to be a fairly casual adventure experience that my wife and I can enjoy together. However, she haaaates games that have a ton of little rules. So, I’ve been hesitant to sit her down to experience it with me. And, it isn’t really meant for solo play. Some of the cards you draw give you optional choices or ask you to test by rolling dice, and so you need to hide part of the information on the card while making those choices and deciding how to deal with your die roll. Thus, while you can technically play single player, you’ll lose a little bit of the fun and have to deal with trying to hide some of the information on those cards to get the full experience. Overall, everything is really nice. If you are going to be able to play it fairly often within a condensed amount of time, say a few months, then I’m sure you’ll get used to all the small rules, cards, events, etc. However, it can be a little overwhelming at first. That said, the rule book is pretty short and I didn’t find any major oversights. The game is clearly a translation and not by someone who is a native English speaker; so you may encounter some interesting grammar. But, so far, nothing was actually painful to read. The only thing that some might think is an oversight is that I didn’t see a specific mention of what happens when your character runs out of health. Normally in these kind of games you die or something when that happens. But, as far as I can tell, you simply don’t have any more health. So, you lose access to your special ability and can’t spend health for an extra effect. There is a space you can move to and get all your health back as well; so try not to think about it as your “life” like in most fantasy combat games. If you’ve made it this far, I may as well mention the box cover. The art, like most of the game art has a nice aesthetic that again reminds me of Atlantis Rising. That said, there is difference between being able to draw well and composing a piece. I think I noticed all this because of how pretty and striking the box art was. It made me look at it so long, I found the narrative of the actions presented actually hilarious. The center of the box has a strong female protagonist on horseback. That’s fine. Diversity is great and all. She’s wearing the appropriate kind of armor and has scars that say “She’s seen some action.” However, behind her, a guy is either staring at her butt, or her horse’s butt. His subtle smile says that he enjoys the view. Also he is carrying a pole, at least three times his height, with a flag that doesn’t match the colors of said female protagonist. Maybe he has the pole because they didn’t let him ride a horse. Maybe he just pole vaults over and over again? Behind this guy is another woman, also on horseback, who I think is intended to be hearing the pleas of the citizenry. Instead, it looks like she really really wants the poor disease-ridden people to stop touching her. Meanwhile, off to the side the one black guy is like “Hey, white people, did no one notice there is a city on fire!” And for some reason, it looks like there is mist around him. But, he is in the foreground while the flaming village far off, in the valley, can be seen clear as day. So maybe an inconsistency? That, or he’s a ghost. In a way this cover really represents the game well. It is beautiful, visually striking, has a lot going on, tells a story, and is maybe not coming together quite as it was intended to.

   The rules are straightforward, the narrative elements are well written and fun, and the game components are beautifully designed, illustrated, and produced. It feels like a blinged-up version of itself, not a standard retail purchase. We love the painted meeples. All aspects of art and graphic design carry the medieval storybook theme forward nicely. So far, we’ve played through all the stories three times without getting at all bored with it. Highly recommended as a special addition to our gaming library.

   If you want a really fun Board Game that’s cooperative you’ll love this. The rules are quite simple to learn and the experience is fun. Especially rolling the dice. Only complaint is after many plays it can start to feel similar but I do hear expansion content is coming to help make the value even better. I do overall highly recommend because it’s fun and the artwork is lovely.
