- Take part in the conflict between titular diadochi – Successors – to the legacy and empire of Alexander the Great.
- Clash with your former brothers in arms turned enemies to gain control of provinces in order to increase the number of your Victory Points or pull appropriate strings to secure the Legitimacy Points e.g. by providing Alexander’s tomb with a suitable resting place. But beware, too many Victory Points with respect to other players and you end up having an esteem of a Usurper who could be attacked freely by everyone.
- Therefore, choose you strategy wisely. It sometimes is more profitable to hold your horses for every aspect of the game is intertwined with another and the sudden turn of events may surprise you with the most unfortunate outcome, for instance you might be forced to take sides with someone who stabbed you in the back couple of rounds earlier.
- However, as they must have said even in 4th Century B.C., the end justifies the means. Especially, when succession is at stake.

I had the GMT edition of Successors, and didn’t think I needed to upgrade to this one. A review in Vae Victis magazine convinced me otherwise; I’ve since bought this game, the XL roll-up board, and sold off my GMT edition. The one thing I actively dislike about this edition is the cards; there’s just no reason for these to be tarot-sized cards; the art and flavor text just don’t stand out (with a few exceptions; Olympias has a great card). The miniatures don’t really fly for me, but the standees are great. I think this is the canonical edition now, and since I take this game somewhat seriously that’s also a key consideration. I’m not as big a fan of the five-player game as some others are; it might be a good gameplay experience but it doesn’t reflect the period as well.
All in all, Successors is an amazing game; I think it’s the best multiplayer CDG (but with plenty of competition); I think this is the best version but if you’re just curious and can find the GMT edition for half this price I won’t talk you out of it.
