   Aside from the expected GMT games “text book” quality look, this game is phenomenal in its simple to learn mechanics yet shifting and tense strategic gameplay. It’s a more intellectual, “nerdy” game but if history, thinking and logic are a desired attribute in your gaming experience TS delivers resoundingly! Each game is different and the careful maintenance of the balance of power is executed so satisfyingly. Game length for a beginner may be 2-3 hours. It’s easy to overthink each card and option but after a few plays this game flows. It ain’t pretty but neither was the Cold War. This game reflects that geopolitical condition as well as the constant battle for regional influence.

   Twilight Struggle is like running a marathon, every step is work but when you finish, hot dog do you feel like you achieved something. The game takes anywhere from 3-4 hours to complete (for my group). We typically explain to others that it feels like every single move you do is the most important decision you’re making, which leads to a level of prolonged stress that can only be intentionally experienced every so often. Which leads to why I wouldn’t rate it 5 stars; it simply is not a game I can imagine playing all the time. You really have to be in the mood for it. Great theming, great mechanics, great strategy. But with how much less often we’d be pulling this game off the shelf to play compared to the other top rated Board Game Geek games, its value decreases. Isolated to just the gameplay itself then Yes, it deserves the highest ratings. Holistically though in terms of value compared to other strategy games and how often you’ll play other games compared to this, it does drop in my opinion.
