   This is not the exact same bag as the other House of Staunton bag here: Black which is awesome, But that bag is not available with the logo. (It comes as a prepackaged set.) This bag has a vinyl(?) material on the outside where the other bag has a canvas shell which seems(?) more durable over the long run. But there is no logo. It’s quite a dilemma. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, It is basically a decent bag, just the other one is a tad bit better. The way the shoulder strap is sowed on is different, also. And the USCF bag has a front outer pocket, which is nice. Plus, the logo. I know.

   This is a great travel chess set, and the pieces have a solid weight to them. There’s room in the case for a standard chess timer.

   The USCF has really got it down with this set. Great weighted pieces that are of very high quality. The bag is sturdy and contains pockets for just about everything you need (pens, scorebook, chess clock). Everything fits neatly inside of the bag and it’s got some heft to it once it’s loaded up. I personally take this everywhere I go, just in case there’s a game needing to be played. A bonus here is that it smells great, strongly of “new” when opened up.

   The colors are good and the mat just looks great and feels smooth playing on it. The company did include an extra black pawn, though not a white one, even though it isn’t advertised. Maybe I’d like an extra pawn of both varieties, just in case I lose one.

   UPDATE: The House of Staunton is the greatest! A piece from my set chipped, and they sent me a replacement one in no time. Great sellers with amazing customer service, you won’t go wrong with this one.

   The pieces are great, can’t find any fault. They are big and heavy. The rubber mat could be a bit thicker, but it ok. My gripe is that it is pictured with a rectangular bag with interior pockets, and I received a smaller quiver,
   Bag, a cylindrical tube bag with a zip on one end. A big annoyance since it took quite a while to ship from the US, and then I would have to ship it all the way back for a refund, wasting so much of my time.

   After browsing through the Chess subreddit for hours, this is the set I landed on. The pieces are heavy, the mat is durable, and it comes with a nice case for travel. It also is at the perfect price point for somebody that wants to get into chess, wants a nice set, but doesn’t want to commit to a hand carved set. It packs up quickly and is perfect for a study, dorm room, or a travel set. The bag is about as long as a tennis racket. The actual mat will need to break in slightly – I put heavy books on it and worked the corners until it laid flat after a week or so. Definitely worth the investment for a somebody who wants a nice set but is on a budget.

   White king has a bulge at the bottom due to which it is not very stable. I would have given a five star rating if white king would not have been defective and the Vinyl board would not have a color mark on onewhite square. Apart from this piece all other pieces are build nicely and have a good weighted feel to it. The bag is not very high quality but its not bad. The vinyl board is good except for a color mark on one of its white square. House of Staunton boast about the quality of its product but in the case quality checks are not done properly. UPDATE : 02 Nov, 2018 :- They have sent a replacement for the defective king with a different order which I placed with them. So I have changed the rating to 5 stars.

    Extremely nice set with plastic, durable, heavy pieces that feel substantial and nice to move. The board lays flat and didn’t take that much time to off-gas. Would’ve given 5 stars but the weights rattle around inside a few of the pieces. Overall great!

    I am trying to start learning chess and this is my first set. I’m happy with the product overall. Below are couple of things I noticed. (1) The quality of pieces is solid. I read a review saying that the pieces are fragile, but I found they are solidly built and durable. They look beautiful. I love black and white plastic pieces rather than wooden (wooden colored) pieces. I didn’t find any damage to pieces. (2) The set contains 34 pieces (32 + 2 extra queens). (3) I got triple-weighted pieces, and found the weight is perfect. The weight is at the bottom part of each piece, which makes pieces stable. Very easy to move. The size is I assume standard for competition. This is not definitely not travel size, but I found the size perfect. Felt pad is attached to the bottom of a piece. (4) The vinyl chess board is BIGGER than I imagined, but I guess this is the standard size for competition. It is 18 inches each side. Each square is 2.25 x 2.25. As described, the vinyl is of good quality. When I unroll and put onto a flat surface, it becomes flat pretty quickly. It’s also nice that there are numbers and alphabets on the sides, helpful for a beginner like me. (5) The nylon bag is also big! Of course, the bad can contain the big vinyl chess board and the clock (which is not included). Inside the bag there are three pockets, two for storing black and white pieces, and one for something else (pencil?). There is a strap included, so you can carry the bag on your shoulder. Overall, I am happy with my first chess board!

    By far the best chess set I have came cross especially the vinyl mat and the bag, deducting a star because of the description of “Triple Weighted” Chess piece which is not that heavy as I my older pieces are more heavier & bigger than this however still these are really sturdy with good weight and much better than the cheaper options available in the market. If you can burn some cash than definitely go for this US made chess set.

    I used to participate in Chess club and tournaments when I was younger, and I wanted a modern chess set I could take to the park, a friends house, ect. While I love beautiful and ornate marble sets, they aren’t the kind of set you want to travel with. The weighted pieces feel great, the mat is strong and sturdy with a pleasant texture, and the bag is very useful. Overall a great chess set at a great price for on the go chess!

    – Carrying bag/storage is spacious to carry clock or book with two pen slots

    CONS
    – Shipping not included
    – At $36, slightly expensive. Less than $30 would be the right value imo
    – Chess board smells slightly, may be because of the material, but that didn’t stop us from playing
    – carrying case is not the best quality, especially the zipper, but it works.

    Overall I will give would give 9/10 – deduct 1 point for the cost.

    Nice package for easy travel and storage, and a decent mat. The pieces are well made with little to no moulding seams. The plastic seems very hard, brittle and rigid, but are plenty heavy and sturdy. Other sets I’ve owned were made of a softer plastic and were more forgiving under abuse, but cost more. The felt on The bottom of the pieces is a nice touch, and are centered very well and seem to be stuck on securely. The outside pouch zipper has a loop like many suit cases have for a padlock, but there isn’t anything to lock it to. Maybe for a lanyard or keychain? Seems odd. An excellent starter or home kit for sure.
