   I’ve wanted to build a US Fleet since buying the Master & Commander starter box, but had some hesitation since I knew the US Fleet Box had some issues to expect. I saw a good deal here on boardgamesweekly.com and jumped on it, but wasn’t surprised to see some faults in the product. Contents: *1x USS President resin & pewter model (exclusive) *1x USS United States resin & pewter model (exclusive) *3x Frigate plastic sprue kits *1x pewter detail kit to create the USS Chesapeake, USS Constellation and USS Congress (exclusive) *6x Brig plastic sprue kits *1x gunboat squadron resin & pewter kit *Accompanying game cards, flags, sails, thread & ratlines The box’s strength is the two exclusive resin super frigates to accompany the USS Constitution available elsewhere. Both seem to be good resin casts, some minimal bowing on the USS United States but not a lot of flash or missing details on either model. I assume Warlord Games uses resin for these models due to small production batches, and I am pretty forgiving of resin errors knowing it can be cleaned up as I build the kit. More frustrating is the pewter masts. Like my previous resin-pewter kits I have purchased from Warlord Games before, the masts are not sufficiently supported for transport and arrived bent and beat up. Warlord Games will replace very damaged masts through customer service from what I understand, and the metal is soft enough to bend back into shape carefully if you can’t wait for a replacement kit. But it’s my biggest annoyance with these kits and I dread working with the metal masts. The plastic ship models are the same as the Master & Commander set, but now come with American flags instead of British or French ones. Flags appropriate to the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (15 stars & stripes) are included on the flag sheet. These are easy to build kits from prior experience and I have no complaints, other than the need to drill a hole into the frigate body to support back-stay rigging. The pewter detail parts to build the Chesapeake, Constellation and Congress though are infamously “oversized.” These parts attatch as details to the plastic frigates to change their appearance. Constellation’s stern cabin windows in this kit are also based on the 1854 ship now in Baltimore, not the era appropriate 1797 ship. I knew about this before my purchase, and it was part of why I waited to buy the box at discount. As far as war gaming representations, I do not find these errors deal breaking, and they can be worked with to create a pleasing looking miniature; but rivet counters should be wary of these errors. The gunship squadron looks fun, and had no damage to its pewter masts and minimal issues with the resin base. There are several spools of thread for rigging, but I’d recommend using a product such as EZ Line instead of the thread Warlord Games provides. In short, this box contains plenty of good pieces and detail parts to start building an American fleet. The pewter parts though due to either shipping damage or poor design fall short and will give a modeler a headache. Experienced modelers and miniature builders will be able to make stunning miniatures from this kit, but novices should be aware of this box’s contents; and I’d recommend they try the plastic ships in the Master & Commander box before attempting any model from Warlord Games with pewter masts. I am forgiving of these issues to an extent, understanding this is a small(er) batch niche product using less refined manufacturing than the injection molded parts. I would recommend it on sale to experienced modelers looking to start their US Fleet builds, but tell new Black Seas buyers to consider trying another product first.

   A great set from Warlord Games covering the US Navy. The game is overall a quick simple and fun representation of 18/19th century naval combat.

   This set includes the plastic brigs and frigates with additional metal and resin components to provide the more unique US navy vessels.
