   When I opened the box for this game, there were no game pieces for Dominant Species: Marine contained in the box, only a small smattering of game pieces to three other kinds of games. The game was obviously used, as it had a slit along the length of the cover of the box and the box was taped shut. I am submitting this as a warning to any potential future purchasers of this game, that if you think you are getting this game at a good bargain (price @$40.00 – 50.00) beware that you might just be getting this defective product: a game box containing some pieces belonging to other games, as I am returning this product and it might be offered for sale again.

   It’s been 11 years since the amazing game Dominant Species came out. After so long and the passing of the amazing designer Chad Jensen we have the successor game Dominant Species Marine. Many of us waited for this for a very long while, and I’m so pleased to say that you will not be disappointed with this game. If not familiar with the original game you’ll play as one of four ocean species fighting for a foothold in a new world. This is a euro war game where you’ll play out the process of evolving your species to be the dominant one in this world where ocean animals are moving to land. You’ll do this through combat with opposing species, adapting to new food types, expanding your control of areas onto new tiles, and performing powerful evolution actions that both help in scoring points and provide both strong benefits and devastating effects against other opponents. An inevitable Asteroid event card will eventually enter into play and end the game. If you are familiar with the original game you probably wonder how different this version is and should you get this one if you own the first? I have to say without hesitation yes, you should check this one out. Gone are the constant checks for dominance on every tile in the game and the introduction of trait cards that allow each player to specialize their species even further at the beginning of the game make this vibrant and new. The biggest change you might see is that you no longer plan out your entire turn by the placement of your action pawns, but instead you take each action as soon you place the pawn, but with rules that each new worker placement pawn must go further right or down from the previous pawn you placed. There is an exciting race to beat your opponents to some of the lower action placement spaces further down the board but at the loss of you being able to use any actions above it. However you may later spend a turn doing a retrieval of your pawns and then start over placement at the top of the board again. This can be a risky but rewarding tactic, until all players have done this rounds won’t end so you can choose how you want to play, but with the possibility that another player finishing their turn may lock you out of getting to place more of your action pawns. Another great feature of this game are the special action pawns that players may take control of and use to score more victory points at the end of the game and use in advanced ways. These special pawns are gained when a player claims dominance over a certain food source that exists in the world by having the most controlled tiles and instances of that food on their player board multiplied. Having these pawns lets you break the previous rule about pawn placement on action spaces. These pawns can be saved and placed anywhere on the board and even have special action spaces with advanced powers that can only be used by these pieces. The board and tiles are really great looking as are the cards in the game; the coloring is a welcome and refreshing change from the original game and is visually pleasing when playing. If you are new to the series the rulebook is top notch and you will be starting your first games after a good first read of them. There are detailed examples and explanations for what to do when so many things happen that you will be unlikely to find yourself lost in confusion. Whether this is your first exposure to this series or the original is an old favorite you are going to love Dominant Species Marine!

   If you loved Dominant Species but had alienated too many friends to get 5 people to join you, you’re in luck. . . Now you only need to con 3 people into letting you unleash domination card oblivion on them. The changes definitely make this game more approachable than the original game (i.e. dominance scoring and dynamic turns instead of programmatic) while maintaining a similar cut throat mentality. The addition of random selection trait cards also adds to the replayability, it’s unlikely you’ll ever have two identical games. This has been a great addition to the rotation and the gaming group has been really enjoying it.
