   If you’ve got the money- and want a wooden set you can take with you, or just don’t want to leave set up all the time at home – this is the one. Very comfortable size- both board and pieces. The ‘fit’ of the folding board is excellent- when open and in play, the hinged seam is nearly invisible and the board is stable and lies very flat. The pieces have a rich feel and the weighting is ‘just right’. Secure and convenient storage for the pieces inside the board when folded.

    I looked at hundreds of chess sets online. This one seamed to be a nice balance, not to expensive at $114 but not too cheap. Larger than a standard 12 or 15 inch board but not too big like the 20 or 21 inch boards. Folding for portability with a barely visible hinged seam when open, tight fitting dense foam inserts to hold pieces well and all wood construction. When I received the chess set it was really well protected. Inside outer box was two independent layers of plastic wrapped and sealed foam, one inside the other, followed by a cardboard sleeve with yet some more foam. The board is exactly like the pictures, well made smooth finish all tight seams on the wood inlay, box joints on outer frame and everything lined up perfectly. The corners are nicely rounded (important for wear down the road) and the board is sturdy with out being excessively heavy. The bottom edges are smooth and with felt that overlaps the two halves covering the hinges insures no scratching a table underneath. The pieces are a really nice substantial size, just as described, all wood, nicely weighted with heavy felt well centered on bottom. Size does matter and these pieces are tall (K3.75 in), larger than most, sized perfect to the board without crowding the squares. They feel good in the hand, are very smooth, they make a satisfying thud when capturing a piece, glide nicely across the board and look even slightly better than in the pictures online. I love that the rooks are not diminutive as is the current trend. They are the almost as tall as the knights and bishops and have a decent battlement depth on the top. In most sets they are barely taller than pawns and are very flat on top which is a pet peeve of mine as rooks are representative of towers, worth 5 points vs 3 for bishops and knights and should stand strong and tall on the corners. This with the addition of two extra queens as well as good reviews helped me decide on this set. The only nitpicking points I would make is the piano type hinges and locking clasps could be a little larger, heavier and of slightly higher quality. They function fine but with long term heavy use they might not hold up as well. The clasps are tiny, good for not extending too low to scratch a table when board is opened but hard to “release” with out strong small fingers or some serious heavy duty finger nails. They will probably loosen with use and get easier. The finish on the wood pieces and board could be a bit glossier to give a harder outer coating for protection against moisture and use.. All other pieces are nicely shaped Staunton with the only exception being the Knights. They are not as bad as some other wood sets I looked at with flat sides and crude shapes making it hard to tell its a horse. They have some nice angular body forms, very basic mouth, ears, eyes and even nostrils but don’t expect head or mane details that you would get on a quality resin or even plastic set. It’s the price you pay for wood without shelling out big bucks for more custom detailed pieces. I’ve played several games with my daughters and have enjoyed the chess set. It’s large enough at18 inches to be impressive, is still very portable and makes game play more exciting. If well taken care of, it should last a lifetime. The board is nice enough I’m going to look for a protective padded bag for it. Down the road I may even get a more detailed resin set of pieces. The good quality dense foam inserts would accommodate similar size pieces. Did I mention when opened it doesn’t even look like a folding set? Overall it’s a great chess set for the price. One month later: I tend to be picky, don’t typically give 5 star ratings unless totally blown away and submitted a very detailed review. I stand by everything I said but with more use I would revise the review slightly. I’ve grown quite fond of this chess set and have now played several dozen games on it with my daughters who can’t believe we use to play on a tiny folding 10 inch cheap wood travel board with thin metal surface and tiny plastic magnetic pieces. I even warmed up to the Knights who my youngest daughter said “they have seen some things” referring to the slightly surprised expression on the faces due to simple round eyes. I’m still going to get a protective padded bag for it (good investment) so it will travel well. There are several nice ones online that will fit it for around $20. I’m happy with the pieces and no longer think about replacing them. The clasps have loosened up a bit and are easier to open although could still be a bit more substantial. We close the set up often as the cat is fascinated with the pieces and likes to bat them about. I’m glad the foam inserts are stiff and of high quality so they will not wear out quickly as some other sets have cheap thin felt coated plastic hollow shells that don’t hold pieces well or cheap non dense foam. The tiny piano hinges I’ve decided are fine as long as the set is well taken care of and kept away from moisture so as not to corrode. If half stars were a thing I would give this set 4 and a half stars. I still think a harder gloss varnish would make the set more durable as it’s made from medium dense wood not hardwoods. Also algebraic notation would have been nice, it’s the only reason this couldn’t be a tournament board. As I said, I admit to be a bit of a nitpicker. Still, treated well this set will last, and for the money it is very good quality.

He wanted a nice set to play at home for his birthday and this set exceeded his expectations! He is in love with it. Each piece is superbly crafted and the chess board is well made. The only thing lacking was a bag to keep it in to prevent damage.
